Bridal Alterations FAQ: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Fitting
One of the biggest questions we hear from brides is, “What should I expect during alterations?” If you’ve never had a wedding gown altered before, that’s completely normal! Every week I help Iowa brides through this process, and my goal is to make it as stress-free as possible.
Here are the answers to the questions I get asked most often.
When should I schedule my first bridal alterations appointment?
The sweet spot is 4–6 weeks before your wedding.
After more than 15 years in the bridal industry, I’ve found this timing creates the best experience for nearly every bride. Waiting until this window usually means:
- Fewer alteration appointments
- Lower overall alteration costs
- Less stress leading up to your wedding
- Your shoes and undergarments have been chosen
- Your body has likely settled into its wedding-day size
- Your gown fits beautifully when it matters most—your wedding day
Booking much earlier often means additional fittings if your measurements, shoes, or undergarments change.
How many fittings will I need?
Most brides need three appointments.
First Fitting (About 60 minutes)
We’ll pin and mark your gown, discuss any custom changes, and create your alteration plan.
Second Fitting (30–40 minutes)
You’ll try your gown on again so we can fine-tune the fit and make any small adjustments if needed.
Final Pick-Up Appointment
During your final appointment, you’ll try on your finished gown one last time before taking it home. If you’ve chosen to have your gown professionally pressed (available for an additional fee), it will be freshly pressed and ready for your wedding day. If you’re traveling, I can also help pack your gown into a carry-on suitcase.
Will I ever need more than three appointments?
Sometimes—but not often.
Only about 1 out of every 8 brides requires an additional fitting. This is usually because of:
- Custom changes (i.e. adding sleeves, layers to the gown, modifying the neckline)
- Added beading or embellishments
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Significant sizing changes during the alteration process
Where are appointments held?
All bridal fittings take place in my private in-home studio.
Appointments are available Monday through Friday, with the first appointment beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the last appointment beginning at 6:00 p.m.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring:
- Your wedding gown
- The shoes you plan to wear
- The undergarments or shapewear you plan to wear
Not completely sure which shoes or shapewear you’ll choose? That’s okay! Many brides bring multiple options so we can determine what works best with their gown.
Why are shoes and undergarments so important?
They directly affect how your gown fits.
The height of your shoes changes the hem, while different bras or shapewear can completely change how the bodice fits. Without these items, I can’t accurately pin your gown.
If you arrive without your shoes or undergarments, your fitting cannot be completed and a cancellation fee will apply.
Likewise, if alterations are completed using one pair of shoes or one type of undergarment and you later decide to wear something different, additional alteration charges may be necessary.
Can I bring someone with me?
Absolutely!
Many brides enjoy bringing a parent, sibling, or close friend.
To help keep appointments focused and comfortable for everyone, I ask that all guests be at least 18 years old unless prior arrangements have been made.
Why aren’t children allowed at fittings?
Wedding gowns require careful pinning, precise measurements, and plenty of movement around the dress. My studio is also an active workspace with sewing equipment, sharp pins, irons, and other tools that aren’t safe for little ones.
Keeping appointments adults-only allows me to give each bride my full attention while maintaining a safe environment for everyone.
What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?
Because every fitting is scheduled specifically for one bride, appointment times are very valuable.
If you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment, I simply ask for at least 24 hours’ notice.
Appointments canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice will incur a $50 cancellation fee, which will be added to your next alteration invoice.
This policy also applies if an appointment cannot be completed because the required shoes or undergarments were not brought to the fitting.
Do you press wedding gowns?
Yes!
Professional pressing is available as an additional service before your final pickup appointment.
Many brides appreciate having their gown professionally steamed and pressed so it arrives at their getting-ready location looking beautiful and wedding-day ready.
