FAQ: When Do I Need To Start My Bridal Alterations?

I get this questions all the time. Your wedding dress is one of the most important dresses you’ll ever wear, and it’s important that it fits perfectly on your big day. Bridal alterations are an essential part of achieving the perfect fit, but when should you schedule these appointments to ensure everything is ready for your wedding day? In this blog post, we will provide you with a bridal alterations timeline to help you plan and schedule your appointments accordingly. Please note this is the time line we use at Will & Ward Alterations Studio. I suggest to all brides that as soon as you have purchased you gown you start looking into an alteration specialist. Many seamstresses/seamsters book up years in advance especially in the bridal industry so it is important to contact your alterations specialist as soon as you can to make sure they can get you in, in their time frame.

Alternate timelines for Will & Ward Alterations Studio can be required if you:

  1. Plan to make custom changes to the gown above and beyond the typical bridal alterations (altering sides, hemming gown, adding bustle, altering straps etc.). This can include a neckline modification (turning strait neckline into sweetheart, building up neckline, etc.), changing the skirt style, adding fabric elements (sleeves, neckline details, slit, etc.), lining bodice, adding additional sparkle (beads, glitter tulle, lace, sequins, rhinestones, etc.),
  2. Pregnancy,
  3. Long distance alterations,
  4. Destination wedding,
  5. Other special circumstances.

This is why I always recommend contacting your alterations specialist as soon as you purchase your gown to make sure you get the fit you are looking for on your special day.

4-6 Weeks Before Your Wedding: The First Fitting The first fitting is typically scheduled 4-6 weeks before your wedding day. During this appointment, your tailor will take your measurements and discuss any necessary alterations. It’s essential to bring the undergarments and shoes you plan to wear on your wedding day to this appointment, as they will impact the fit of your dress. This fitting will allow you to see how the dress looks on you and what needs to be altered.

2-3 Weeks Before Your Wedding: The Second Fitting Your second fitting should be scheduled two- three weeks before your wedding day. At this appointment, your tailor will have made the necessary alterations and adjustments to your dress. You’ll be able to try it on and make sure it fits perfectly. This fitting will give you a good idea of how the dress will look on your wedding day.

Week of your wedding: The Final Fitting Your final fitting should be scheduled the week of your wedding. This fitting allows you to try on your gown one last time, pick up the dress pressed if desired. It is important to remember your shoes and undergarments for this final fitting to verify you are going to be walking down the aisle with the fit you desire.

In conclusion, bridal alterations are a crucial part of making sure your wedding dress fits perfectly on your big day. By following this timeline and scheduling your appointments accordingly, you can ensure that your dress fits perfectly, and you feel confident and comfortable throughout your wedding day.
